Flowers

Scientists say there are over 270,000 species of flowers that have been documented and are living in the 21st Century. But scientists have yet to answer basic questions about these marvels of beauty... What led to their amazing diversity? Are there flowers that have not changed much during the evolution of this planet?

The first plant fossils found were woody magnolia-like plants dating back 93 million years. Pale botanists have more recently uncovered tiny herb-like flower fossils dating back 120 million years. Flowering plants, called angiosperms by scientists, were believed to be already diverse and found in most locations by the middle of the Cretaceous period… 146 million years ago. A myriad of images of preserved flowers and flower parts [in very fine detail] have been found in fossils located in Sweden, Portugal, England, and along the Eastern and Gulf coasts of the United States. Below are a few brief histories of some of today’s best loved flowers.

We should be in the heat of the summer right now—and for some of you out there, particularly those out in the western states That being said, it made sense to us here at the florists to send you a bouquet that comes from the tropical landscapes where flowers and plants can tolerate these higher temperatures. And while your featured floral arrangement this month can thrive in these hotter days, our choice to bring this bouquet to you is really rooted in an effort to deliver a different perspective. Many of our arrangements feature broad, soft pedalled flowers and wide backing greens. The result is often a bouquet that fills out the vase and remains quite wide, visually, above the host vessel. This month, the allure of the flowers taking centre stage is in their vibrant colours and simplistic yet exotic form. Our featured arrangement this month represents an example of contrast in floral shapes. The bouquet consists of eight stems of various coloured Anthurium from Hawaii. The most striking component of the arrangement is the contrast between the exceptionally thin stems supporting the large, glossy, brilliantly-coloured Anthurium. This arrangement repeatedly draws the eye from the thin supporting structures of the stems out to the large floral constellation created by vibrant Anthurium bracts and gives one the impression that they're viewing a snapshot of holiday fireworks ablaze in the nighttimes sky.
